In 2018, Darkin Architects were appointed by a private client to assist in the development of a unique retirement project. Rather than a typical extension which adds additional kitchen, living or sleeping space, this extension is to house a grand retirement project - a large model railway.

This presented a number of key challenges:

• Designing a large extension that doesn't look out of place
• Ensuring a suitable garden space remains
• Providing even lighting for the model set
• Providing a large span with no columns

Darkin Architects teamed up with EMA Lighting and with Barratt Associates to overcome these issues and produce the final result you can see in the images below.
