Listed + Heritage Buildings

What is a Listed Building?

A listed building, or listed structure, is one that has been placed on one of the four statutory lists maintained by Historic England in England, Historic Environment Scotland in Scotland, Cadw in Wales, and the Northern Ireland Environment Agency in Northern Ireland.[1]

If you plan on undertaking works to a listed building, you will need to acquire Listed Building Consent in addition to other consents and approvals. Works to listed buildings often involve more detail, care and consideration than other construction or renovation projects.

What is a Heritage Building?

A heritage building is one which may be of significant historical importance, either to you or the local community, but that doesn't have the statutory protection of Listed Building Status. Interested parties may be interested in preserving heritage features of the building or using traditional construction techniques in order to preserve the character of the building.
